Annual Physical Exams for Adults

Kaiser Permanente California Plans include one annual physical for members*. An additional ob-gyn visit is included for women. This Annual Physical Exam is considered to be Preventive Care. However, Kaiser physical exams scheduled for employment or sports purposes do not fall under Preventive Care and will be done at the expense of the member.

What happens when you go to get your physical?

1. Your doctor will ask you about the following:

  • Lifestyle habits
  • Medication
  • Diet
  • Exercise
  • Work situation
  • Stress level

2. Your Physician will do a Physical Examination:

  • Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, Pulse
  • Ears, Nose, Throat, Neck
  • Skin: Your doctor will check for general skin health, circulation, new or changed moles, skin conditions, and signs of skin cancer.
  • Abdominal check for size and position of vital organs
  • Muscle reflexes

Additional Information Regarding Physicals

  • Men will have a prostate examination.
  • Women may choose to have the Annual OB Check-up combined with the Annual Physical Exam with their Primary Care Physician. If a fee is required, only one fee would be collected at the time of service. Since women are allowed two separate appointments for the Annual Check-up, they may choose to see their OB-GYN at a later date for other preventive reasons such as Family Planning. (It is important to make it clear to the person scheduling your appointment exactly what you want to have happen at your appointment so that the doctor is given the necessary amount of time.)

* Some plans include annual physical exams for no charge, while other plans require a copayment.
