Why do health insurance rates tend to go up?

Medical insurance costs have been increasing steadily each year. Several factors cause healthcare prices and health insurance premiums to rise. The United States has made incredible advances in medical science that have increase life spans as well as quality of life. These advances do not come without a cost. More advanced medical technology, procedures, and prescription medications benefit us all and at the same time increase the cost of healthcare for us all. Longer life spans mean an increased population of aged citizens. We're living longer and the longer we live the greater costs there are for our medical care. Also, health insurance rates tend to go up as you age. Older people are charged higher rates than younger people. Each time you go up an age band (either on the five year mark or the ten year mark) your rates will go up until you qualify for senior coverage.

How can I get more affordable health insurance?

There are three simple ways to lower your health insurance premiums: 1. Switch to a deductible plan. 2. Increase your deductible. 3. Change your carrier.

  1. Switch to a deductible plan
Many people on high cost copayment plans and other types of rich benefit health insurance find incredible savings by changing to a deductible plan. Often, you can cut your premiums in half or nearly in half simply by changing to a plan with a deductible. Many times the savings from changing is equal to or greater than the actual deductible.
  2. Increase your deductible.
If you are on a plan with a lower deductible, switch to a plan with a higher deductible and your medical insurance rates will go down. You will incur greater risk should a catastrophe occur and you are hit with expensive healthcare costs, but many find that the savings from increasing the deductible amount more than makes up for this risk.
  3. Change your carrier.
If you find that with your current health insurance carrier, rates seem to be seriously going up and up each year or even each quarter, that's a sign that it may be time to switch carriers. Some medical insurance carriers do what is called pooling. Each quarter those who apply are placed into a pool of applicants that applied during that quarter. They are not placed in the entire collection of members with that carrier, but rather a smaller pool of people who applied at a certain time. Then rates increase as that small pool of people incur greater and greater healthcare costs. No new healthy people are being added to the pool. Rather, healthy people that can get health insurance elsewhere are leaving the carrier so that pool of people gets an increasingly unhealthy or sick population. The more the healthy people leave and the more the remaining sick people cost to the carrier, the more that carrier will increase rates for people in the pool, until most people leave because they just can't afford it anymore. Carriers that do pooling offer very attractive rates on the front end, but health insurance prices tend to get out of control over time. If you are with a carrier that uses this pooling model, we recommend switching now before rates get too high and definitely before you acquire a pre-existing health condition that would make it impossible for you to get coverage elsewhere. Kaiser Permanente does not use this pooling model. All new and existing members are placed into the same collection of members, so price increases are modest and tend to only be around 10% per year.
