Who could benefit from short term health insurance?

Consider a temporary medical policy if you fall into any of these categories:

  • I’m in-between jobs.
  • I’m at a new job and must complete the probation period before qualifying for health benefits.
  • I need a cheaper alternative to COBRA.
  • My employer suddenly cancelled our group plan and I need insurance right away.
  • I’m almost ready for Medicare; I need a gap plan.
  • I no longer qualify under my parents’ group medical coverage.
  • I’m having trouble qualifying for standard health insurance because of a pre-existing condition that is not severe.
  • My job or school requires me to get insurance immediately.

In short, the value of short term health insurance is that it buys you time to get to the next landing place, be it the next job, an open enrollment period, Medicare, or your ideal health plan.

Eligibility Requirements for Temporary Health Insurance

People age 2 to 64 may qualify for short term medical insurance with HCC Life Insurance. Applicants cannot be an expectant parent, have other medical insurance, or be a member of the armed forces. Also, they must be able to answer ‘no’ to the five medical questions on the application. Ordinarily, it takes 24 hours to know if you qualify or not.

An applicant may include their spouse and children, so long as they also meet the eligibility criteria. Note that children under age 19 are subject to medical underwriting. This is because the Health Reform Law that exempts children from medical underwriting does not apply to temporary health insurance plans.

Affordable Short Term Health Insurance

Typically, the price for temporary health insurance is considerably lower than standard health insurance. For example, the cost for a 32 year old male in Northern California to get a $1,000 short term deductible plan is about one third the price of a comparable standard deductible plan with Kaiser Permanente. The premium is much lower because the benefits are not as comprehensive. Since the goal of short term health insurance is to buy basic protection until you can get a more permanent solution to your health care needs, it could still be the best option.

How Does Short Term Health Insurance Work?

Generally, short-term plans are geared for catastrophic incidents, and not for ongoing or routine visits or treatments. On a short term medical plan with HCC Life Insurance, you would be covered mainly for urgent care, emergencies, and hospitalization. You would not be covered for regular doctor visits, prescriptions, or preventive care. Also, services related to pre-existing conditions would be excluded. All covered benefits are subject to the deductible, except for visits to an urgent care center, which would be a flat fee of $50. It’s the best direction to go if you’re mainly looking for major medical protection and don’t mind forgoing the small ticket stuff.

All HCC temporary health insurance plans are on a deductible basis. This means the member first pays out of pocket for services. When they’ve paid up to the amount of the deductible, then, the insurance kicks in. At that point, the member will pay either 20% or 50% of the next $5000 worth of services, depending on the plan they choose.

Individuals can personalize their plan by selecting the deductible size and the coinsurance level that best fits their needs, Members can also select how long they want the coverage to be in effect. In California, the minimum policy period is 30 days; the maximum is 6 months.
